Donald Trump actually plans on meeting with Mexico’s President, Enrique Peña Nieto, a few hours before giving a speech in Arizona. This Arizona speech is reportedly meant to clarify Trump’s position on immigration.
Last Friday Peña Nieto invited both Trump and Clinton since they are the major party nominees to Mexico. This information was given by the Mexican President’s office to the Washington Post on Tuesday night.
Trump’s numbers have been lagging, and Hillary has been using Trump’s stance on immigration, and race relations against him in political ads. Trump is seeing this opportunity, pushed for the meeting to be this week.
Late Tuesday night both Trump and Peña Nieto confirmed this meeting on twitter.
“I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow,” Trump wrote Tuesday night. Shortly after, Peña Nieto’s office wrote that “El Señor” Donald Trump has accepted the invitation and will meet privately on Wednesday with Peña Nieto.”
Peña Nieto later tweeted that the meetings were to “promote the interests of Mexico in the world and, principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are.”
Over the last week or so Trump has been wavering on his hard-line immigration policies. Trump is scheduled to hold fundraisers in California on Wednesday and to give a speech on immigration in Phoenix that night.
The Clinton campaign responded with “What ultimately matters is what Donald Trump says to voters in Arizona, not Mexico, and whether he remains committed to the splitting up of families and deportation of millions,” wrote Jennifer Palmieri, senior Clinton Campaign advisor.
What this meeting does for Trump is two-fold. First, this meeting shows a worldwide audience that he is capable of meeting with heads of state on political issues. This also shows moderates that maybe he isn’t as hardline as the media portrays him to be. It gives him an out for the racist comments he made at the beginning of his campaign. It will be interesting to read the Phoenix speech that comes that night.
